A Rare Medium Well Done: 1.29.13
Looks like we have a winner. And once again it's from the fine folks at Texas Motor Speedway. Not only can Eddie Gossage throw the best party, he can also act the part. Literally!
Appearing in last nights season premier episode of "Dallas", the race king proved superior. And he did it with minimal dialogue. A tough proposition.
Against the back-drop of the Ewing clan trying to introduce an alternative fuel for NASCAR, Eddie was riding shotgun to real life driver Ricky Rudd. But it was silent, stoic Eddie that stole the scene. Portraying the person he does best, he was the man in charge. The guy guiding the segment. He was terrific. And true to his promo man roots, viewers were sure to get a glimpse of the palace that is Texas Motor Speedway. Viewers got a front row seat to the best racing facility in the country.
I can't remember who said it, but some critic mused that the power of acting is not on the spoken word, but the method on which you can communicate non-verbally. Eddie hit a grand slam. He took the checkered flag.
Looking back at other owners/general managers/team presidents to exercise their acting chops, Eddie G now sits atop. Better than Mark Cuban in Entourage. Superior to Czar Jerry in his appearance in "Dallas" where he was as stiff as a wooden Indian. And certainly better than Tom Hicks when he portrayed Ben the rat in the forgettable movie "Willard" (what, you don't remember the genesis of the large rodent?). Eddie has now added to his already full plate of responsibilities.
With Daytona only a few weeks away, and the big NASCAR event at TMS right around the corner, Eddie will be spread thin. I see Broadway. Eddie as Hamlet. As Willie Loman. Max Bialystock. Maybe even a song and dance in "South Pacific". The roles are endless.
But the smart money will be Eddie playing the character he does best. Himself. Putting on the best show and spectacle in the country. He'll never shy from his passion and love. Racing.
It's our victory and the silver screen's loss.
