Person Of Interest Named In Dallas Serial Rapes Investigation
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Dallas Police late Thursday identified a person of interest they are seeking as part of their investigation into a series of rapes in South Dallas.
The man, 29-year-old Alan Mason, is described as being 5-feet 10-inches tall, weighing 185 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.
Earlier in the day, another rape victim came forward to report the ninth sexual assault by the serial rapist.
Police say that assault happened in late July in the 2700 block of Morning Avenue. The first attack happened on June 22 and the most recent was reported on September 1 – all of them have happened in the area near Fair Park.
Police say they are awaiting DNA results from one of the victims and processing more than 25 tips which have come in since they issued a warning to the public Tuesday night. Investigators had hoped to interview a potential witness Thursday morning so they could compose a sketch of the suspect. However, police say they have not yet been able to complete it.
Meanwhile, women in Fair Park are on edge knowing a rapist is in their midst. Each time, the suspect has put a gun to the victim's head, then sexually assaulted them.
For Mammie Joyner, who lives on the same street where three of the rapes have occurred, the fear is very real.
"It's real nerve-wracking. Somebody broke my light, like maybe two weeks ago, and jumped the fence," she said.
Two of the rapes were reported in June, the other seven were reported in just the past two weeks.
A community meeting to discuss the crimes is planned for Thursday evening at 6 p.m. at True Lee Missionary Baptist Church.
Church secretary Felicia Clayborne says her number one concern is the length of time it took for the public to be notified.
"I'm not really understanding why, you know, that was kept in the dark," she said.
Dallas Police Chief David Brown told CBS11 the department informed the public as soon as it was known that the rapes were connected.
Brown said one of the first two victims did not initially cooperate with police.
"These victims are often in shock and not ready to talk and we have to go at their pace. And their pace led us to talking with the public as of yesterday," he said Wednesday.
Chief Brown will not be at the community meeting. Deputy Chief Michael Coleman is expected to attend.
Oak Farms Dairy has now added a $10,000 reward to the $5,000 reward already offered by Crime Stoppers. Police are asking anyone with information to call (214) 373 8477.
