8-Year-Old Working To Provide Smoke Detectors For Strangers

GRAND PRAIRIE (KRLD) --It started as a simple act of kindness, but has now grown into a much larger effort to keep people safe.

Last weekend, 8-year-old Hector Montoya from Grand Prairie used money he had been saving for a video game system to buy 100 smoke detectors for strangers. He got inspired after hearing about a deadly house fire that could have been prevented by a detector.

With the help of the Grand Prairie Fire Department and volunteers, he worked door-to-door to install those detectors. Afterward, two kids from Collin County surprised him with his own PS4 gaming system.

Hector loved the gift, but still has his mind set on his new selfless goal. His friends and family created a "go-fund-me" site for him which has already raised more than half of the $3,000 it is asking for to fund another batch of smoke detectors.
