74-Year-Old Woman Shot After Answering Front Door

DUNCANVILLE (CBSDFW.COM) - Police in Duncanville are searching for the person who murdered 74-year old woman Wednesday morning, as she answered the front door of the home she's lived in for 50 years.

The shooting happened on Highland Drive, near Main Street and Danieldale Road. The street is in a residential area that Duncanville police Officer Doug Sisk says is generally quiet.

According to witness accounts, someone knocked at Barbara Vincent Strain's front door. After the great-grandmother answered, for whatever reason, she closed the door. That's when a series of shots were fired.

Police say two adult grandchildren were in the house, along with 3-great grandkids. One of them heard the shots and called 911.

"About 7:25 we got a call about a shooting down in the 1300 block of Highland Drive," Sisk explained. "When the officers arrived they found that a 74-year-old female had been shot at the front door of the residence."

When emergency crews arrived they immediately tried to help Strain. But Sisk said, "The victim was transported by Duncanville Fire Department to Methodist Hospital where she was pronounced dead."

Duncanville PD's homicide unit interviewed neighbors and searched for fingerprints as they investigated the city's first murder in two years.

Police don't have a description of the shooter that they are releasing and have given no indication of what the motive could have been.

"The family members said she helped everybody out, so yes it doesn't make any sense, so that's why we want to figure out who did this and get them in custody where they belong," said Sisk.
