PLANO (CBSDFW.COM) – In less than a year Toyota will open its new Plano campus and the company is looking to hire a lot of North Texans to join the team.
It is really impressive how much progress Toyota has made here since the groundbreaking almost two years ago. The company now has hundreds of workers in North Texas, and that's just to build the facility.
With an end in sight for the cranes and hard hats, attention turns to the workers who will call the new Plano campus home. Toyota's North American CEO announced he expects about 70% of his current employees to make the move to Texas. That leaves a lot of open positions that need to be filled.
"To meet our needs, we're hiring over 1,000 team members across many disciplines within the company," says Jim Lentz, Toyota North America CEO.
Those disciplines include finance, engineering, information systems, marketing, and sales. Over the last two years Toyota has been bringing in employees to a temporary location little by little to help smooth the transition.
"We have about 1,100 there today. We're bringing in about a 100 a month right now, and that's about the maximum that we can," says Lentz.
Once the new headquarters opens in mid-2017, the company will be able to finish importing those employees making the move from California. As for the more than 1,000 jobs to fill Jim Lentz says he's encouraged by the potential of the local workforce.
"I love the authenticity, the can-do attitude, the hard-working attitude that Texans have, and I think that's what our people are finding. They're also finding that people are genuine here," comments Lentz.
