6-Year-Old Hit & Run Victim Buried, Suspect Arraigned
GRAND PRAIRIE (CBS 11 NEWS) - Friends and family came from all over to say goodbye to John Paul Raidy. Services for the six-year-old, who was killed by a hit-and-run last week, were held at Laurel Land funeral home Wednesday morning.
Tammy Lowe, the former teacher who has been charged with the little boy's death, spent the day in court, where she was arraigned on two felony charges of manslaughter and failure to stop and render aid. A judge set her bond at $200,000.
"She's particularly upset today because she knows the funeral is today for the child she feels a lot of pain in her heart of the child," says Cameron Gray, Lowe's attorney.
Grand Prairie police say Lowe ran a light that had been red for 14 seconds before he struck Raidy crossed the street. Raidy was in the crosswalk, with his mother just a few steps behind, pushing his younger sister in a stroller.
Police say Lowe took off and turned herself in at the police station five days later.
"She went in on her own and she wants to do the right thing," says Gray.
Before turning herself in, Lowe submitted a handwritten letter of resignation to the Grand Prairie ISD, which simply states, "I resign my position as teacher effective immediately. Thank you."
Lowe's husband had no comment as he walked into the police station today to meet with detectives.
Lowe's bond is set at 200 thousand dollars. Her attorney says it should be lower because she is a first-time offender, who has never spent time in jail before.
"I've talked with the minister of her church and a lot of her friends," says Gray. "And it's going to be very difficult to get her out of jail with a 200 thousand dollar bond."
