6-Year-Old Celebrated On Her Return To School
FRISCO (CBSDFW.COM) - A child's trip to school rarely makes news. But few of those trips are as special as the one 6-year-old Libby Serber made Tuesday to her Frisco Elementary School.
The 6-year-old arrived to the cheers and chants of classmates along a parade route that stretched for more than a block. "I hope she will feel like we're all behind her and fighting this with her," said family friend Dasha Peters.
Libby Serber boarded a fire engine along with her family for an emotional return to Isbell Elementary in Frisco. Friends organized the reception after Libby spent the last two weeks recovering from surgery to remove a kidney and cancerous tumors from her heart.
"She had a low grade fever for 3 weeks we were told it was just a fever virus a fever virus," said Libby's mother Cara Serber.
Libby has recovered enough to return to class at least for a day. She wore a crown and a smile while her first grade friends left no doubt how much she's been missed.
"We're here to support Libby, said first grader Sarah Schindall.
That support may not just warm Libby's heart, but also help heal it. "We need to keep her strength up and things like this and knowing we have that type of support is exactly what we need Libby Lou going," said Cara Serber.
School officials say the welcome back rally was also a learning experience for students. "Actually Libby has shown us a whole lot this week her little inner fortitude and her perservance and her joyful spirit that just shines through no matter what has taught her parents and all of us at school a big lesson," said principal Ginger Lemons.
Libby will begin cancer treatment soon. Doctors say her prognosis is good.
