DENTON (CBSDFW.COM) - A 5-year-old girl was killed and three of her family members injured in a two-vehicle wreck in Denton on Christmas Eve.
The family was traveling southbound I-35w near 2499 when Public Safety troopers were conducting a traffic stop on the shoulder of the roadway, causing the traffic to slow down.
A 1998 Toyota Camry holding the family of four was at a stop in the left lane when it was struck by a Toyota 4Runner from behind.
According to Denton police spokesman, Orlando Hinojosa, the driver of the 4Runner may have been on their cell phone at the time of the crash.
"She hadn't even started her life. You know that's the time to be happy, to enjoy opening gifts," said Officer Hinojosa.
He was celebrating Christmas with his family when he got the call about the fatal wreck. All he could think about was his son and daughter.
The girl was transported by air to Children's Hospital in Fort Worth where she was pronounced dead.
Her parents and their 8-year-old son, as well as the driver of the truck were taken by ambulance to Denton Regional ER and are in unknown condition.
"Right now it's Christmas Eve and you're supposed to be with family. It's just a really sad deal," said Officer Hinojoso.
Police have not yet determined whether the driver will face charges. The incident is still under investigation.
No names have been released.
Officer Hinojoso is pleading with drivers to put down their devices this holiday.
"If you're involved in a crash and you take a life, that's hard on you," said Hinojoso. "That's going to be with you for the rest of your life."
