5 People Dead After Wrong-Way Crash In Mesquite

MESQUITE (CBSDFW.COM) - Five people are dead, including children, after a wrong-way crash in Mesquite. The incident happened just after 11:00 p.m. Wednesday night along Interstate-20, near Farm-to-Market Road 740.

According to police on the scene, the driver of a Ford F-150 pickup truck was heading westbound in the eastbound lanes of traffic. That driver was identified as 27-year-old Krystle Dawn Carranza of Lindale, and police said that her three passengers were kids. Authorities do not know why she was traveling on the wrong side of the highway. It is also not known how Carranza was related to the children.

The children were identified as 5-year-old Nevaeh Carranza, 3-year-old Delaney Carranza and 2-year-old Aleigha Carranza.

The other driver involved in the head-on crash was in a GMC Acadia. His name has not been released.

Both vehicles caught on fire. Rescue crews said that there was nothing they could do to save any of the vicitms.

Only a single lane of eastbound Interstate-20 remained open after the crash, which created traffic backups on Thursday morning as motorists were forced to travel slowly past the wreckage. All lanes of the highway have since re-opened.
