5 Million iPhone 5 Units Sold In 3 Days

NEW YORK (CBS NEWS) - Apple announced on Monday that over 5 million iPhone 5 units have sold over the three days after its launch, selling out and topping its predecessor.

"While we have sold out of our initial supply, stores continue to receive iPhone 5 shipments regularly and customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date," said Apple CEO Tim Cook in a press release. "We appreciate everyone's patience and are working hard to build enough iPhone 5s for everyone."

Last year, the iPhone 4S sold 4 million units over its first weekend. And there are no signs that demand for Apple's smartphone has dwindled. The company reported 2 million pre-orders in the first 24 hours of sale, double the previous record held by the iPhone 4S.

The new smartphone features a 4-inch display, 4G LTE, a new connector and redesigned headphones.
