5 Die In Weekend Weather-Related Texas Accidents
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — Five people have died in weather-related accidents in Texas as a wintry storm system has left thousands without power and cancelled hundreds of flights.
The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory until midday Monday for the Dallas-Fort Worth area, downgrading a winter storm warning. Surface temperatures hovered around 30-34° Monday morning in the DFW area, preventing significant icing on major roadways.
As of Monday morning, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport had cancelled 386 flights in response to the heavy rain and near-freezing temperatures.
The system dumped snow in the Texas Panhandle. The Texas Department of Public Safety says two people died in separate accidents Saturday night on snow-covered roads in wrecks near Amarillo and Dumas. Three people were killed in a multivehicle wreck late Friday near Vega.
Dallas-based electric utility Oncor reported about 23,000 customers without power Monday, in north and west parts of Texas. The outages included more than 10,000 in Tarrant County alone.
