49er Fans Fill Up Cowboys Stadium
DALLAS (CBS 11 NEWS) - If it was tough Sunday to watch the action on the field, the scene in the stands at AT&T Stadium may have been even worse for Dallas Cowboy fans.
But while many Cowboy fans said they were embarrassed by the lack of home field advantage Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers, when asked after the game owner Jerry Jones dismissed the idea that his stadium had turned red.
"First of all, I don't acknowledge there was half," Jones said after a reporter asked him about seeing half of his stadium full of 49er fans.
Jones further dismissed the reporter's observation by saying, "I know you didn't count them."
However, those at the game as well as a national television audience could clearly see a sea of red shirts throughout the stadium.
Will Kuhn, owner of the Addison Point, said it's not just at AT&T Stadium. His bar in Addison was once full of Cowboy fans, now on Sundays it's packed with 49er fans.
Kuhn said the Dallas chapter of the 49ers fan club has grown from four to 400 members in the past four years.
"As a business, I know every bar and restaurant in this area has adopted another secondary team to fill the gap in fans because there has been a lack of excitement for the Cowboys for a long time," Kuhn said.
For those who hope the scene in the stands was week one aberration, ticket broker John Canigan said you can expect a similar opposing fan turn-out when the New Orleans Saints come to town for the Cowboy's next home game.
"(Cowboy games) have always been a destination," said Cadigan, owner of Ticket Attractions. "But it was always a destination because the Cowboys were great and people wanted to see them play. Now the team is average by NFL standards and more people just want to see the stadium."
