300 Dallas Marchers Rally For Trayvon Martin
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Approximately 300 people marched on the Paul Quinn College campus at noon today, to rally around the Florida teenager killed by a neighborhood watch volunteer.
The killing of 17-year old Trayvon Martin has sparked protests and rallies nationwide.
"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere," Texas State Rep. Helen Giddings chanted to the large gathering of students, parents and Dallas area residents.
The rally included attendees wearing hoodie sweat shirts, as a statement against what many called racial profiling, because the Florida teeenager was apparently stopped by the neighborhood watch volunteer because he wore a hoodie shirt also.
"A lot of us believe it could've been us, just because of what we was wearing," Paul Quinn student Tajae Brown said.
Several speakers at the campus rally spoke out against the Florida law known as "Stand Your Ground." Texas State Senator Royce West said the killing of Martin, and the Florida law motivated him to examine Texas' Castle Law. "I'm wearing a hoodie today, because it could've been one of us," Sen. West told the crowd.
