3-Alarm Fire In Irving Apartment Complex Displaces Multiple Families

IRVING (CBSDFW.COM) — With how close the buildings are to each other at the Remington Hills Apartments, it's amazing that firefighters were able to contain the three-alarm flames to one building without threatening the surrounding homes.
The fire broke out at the complex in the 1100 block of Meadow Creek Drive early Saturday morning. The cause remains under investigation, but firefighters are looking into the possibility that something went wrong with a fuse box in one unit's storage closet.
One man was taken to a hospital with second-degree burns, but his injuries are considered non-life-threatening.
Firefighters evacuated surrounding buildings, but the damage was limited to the 10 units in the area of the building where the fire started. They were able to recover some items for residents, but firefighters told CBS 11 six units in the center of the building lost everything.
That was the case for artist Amanda Moreno, who lived directly below the unit where the fire started.
"I'm in shock," she said. "I'm devastated. All my life's work's in there. And stuff is replaceable, but... I'm happy everyone is safe, but there's a lot of memories. They're gone forever."
The Red Cross is helping eight families displaced by the fire. The organization said it helped them find housing and buy new shoes, new clothes and groceries.
A spokesperson for the apartment complex said tenants are required to have renters' insurance.
