2nd North Texas City To Start Ticketing Drivers Passing School Buses

DALLAS COUNTY (CBSDFW.COM) - Drivers, this is your warning. In just a matter of days a second North Texas city will start ticketing and fining drivers caught on camera blowing past stopped school buses.

School just started four weeks ago and already officials in the Coppell Independent School District say they've had more than 100 close calls.

Leaders with Dallas County Schools said they're sharing a graphic video to make a point. The recording shows a stopped school bus with the stop arm stop sign out. But the driver in Dallas ignores everything and slams right into a student.

In that particular case, mounted cameras on the bus caught the driver breaking the law.

When mother Betsy Quinonez watched the video she gasped and said, "Oh my God. That's scary."

Everyone who CBS 11 News showed the video to was shaken by the images. Coppell grandmother Mary Mueller initially thought the video was a fake. "You are not staging this this right?" she asked. "The guy not only needs to be ticketed but his drivers license needs to be taken away."

Starting Wednesday drivers in Coppell who go around school buses will be ticketed and fined. Fines can cost drivers up to $300.

Officials with Dallas County Schools, which run the buses for nearly all of the school districts in the county, said Coppell is one of few cities that is taking an aggressive stance to deal with the problem.

As for the driver seen in the video, officials with Dallas County Schools say they will look at the video, get the license number of the vehicle and send the driver a ticket.
