4th Homicide For Arlington Police In 1 Week
ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - It has been a deadly week in Arlington. Police are investigating their fourth murder in just seven days.
One of the latest crimes has police detectives looking into the case of 67-year-old Signe Edwards, who was found dead with obvious trauma to her body.
Edwards was discovered dead in her home near Highway 287 in southwest Arlington. Police were in and out of the home, located in the 5300 block of Wild West Drive, all day on Monday.
Curbside mailboxes are what, residents said, brought the whole neighborhood together. Nearly everyone who spoke with CBS 11 News said that, when they went out to pick up their mail, the victim was usually out in her yard, and always had a kind greeting for them. The name of the street may be Wild West Drive, but neighbors said that, for decades, it has been anything but. "It's just peaceful, quiet," said Tray Ayers.
Ayers and Wild West Drive resident Marvin Williams both said that they would often see their elderly neighbor interacting with other residents. "She was like a grandmother to a lot of kids," Williams said. "It's sad to me. It's really, really sad."
Four hours after Edwards was discovered, a mile away, 27-year-old John Ross Shreves was found shot to death in his car in the parking lot of No Frills Grill & Sports Bar. Shreves was an English teacher at Kennedale Junior High School. According to the school's website, Shreves had taught at the school for two years. He graduated from Kennedale High School in 2004.
The Kennedale Independent School District posted a statement on its website. "The Kennedale ISD community is deeply saddened by the tragic news of the death of one of our junior high teachers, Mr. Ross Shreves. We extend our sincerest condolences to his family and friends. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them during this difficult time. A gathering will be held at Kennedale Junior High with counselors available for students and staff members from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday) evening."
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner has not determined an exact cause of death, but the incident is being investigated as a homicide. So far, police have no suspects.
In 2012, Arlington had a total of 17 homicides. So far this year, there have been five.
