2013 DFW Spring Theater Preview

The DFW arts and theater community excels year after year with stellar performances that are Broadway worthy. With such a wide array of theater locales, performance styles and genres, DFW residents are fortunate to experience Hollywood and New York City notable performances without the necessity of leaving the city. The 2013 spring theater season is loaded with impressive shows in DFW so mark your calendars and get ready to indulge in one of DFW's most popular attributes–the arts.

Directed by Kevin Moriarty, the ever-so-popular production of "The Odd Couple" will be taking the stage in Dallas beginning March 15. Authored by 1965 Tony Award-winning playwright Neil Simon, this comedic and humorous play has entertained audiences of all backgrounds since its debut on Broadway nearly fifty years ago. The success of the popular theatrical performance on Broadway served as a mechanism for the introduction of "The Odd Couple" television series that began in 1970. Many years later, the hilarious lives of two divorcees, Felix and Oscar, is still compelling viewers and is a definite must-see for the DFW's spring 2013 theater season.

The popular children's fairy tale of "Rumpelstiltskin" will take center stage at the Dallas Children's Theater beginning March 8. The notorious fable of an elf-like creature who magically spins straw into gold will come to life at the theater right before your little one's eyes. For audiences ages 5 and up, the magical interpretation of this globally-adored story is a great theater presentation to bring your children to for the spring season. Most recently seen in both "Shrek" and "Once Upon a Time" movie and television series, Rumpelstiltskin is a tale that will continue to be widely revered by people of all ages and undeniably outlast the test of time.

Centrally located in the heart and soul of Dallas, The Black Academy of Arts and Letters continues to provide culturally stimulating performances for the DFW metroplex. The Black Academy of Arts and Letters will deliver "Martin and Music" to the stage starting March 22. Based off the words and experiences of the iconic Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr., "Martin and Music" is a theatrical production that should not be overlooked when planning your spring 2013 theater itinerary. Featuring Gerald C. Rivers and Charles Holt, this dramatization of a life that changed America will be a memorable and entertaining eyeopener for audiences this spring theater season.

Capturing the approval of Fort Worth theater enthusiasts for over 33 years, Stage West is proud to present its rendition of William Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew." Written by the famous playwright in the late 1500's, this story of gender relations, societal order and courtship is modernly controversial yet still relevant and entertaining to audiences worldwide. Locally and nationally recognized for its excellence in the arts, Stage West will undoubtedly deliver an exceptional performance of this widely admired play. "The Taming of the Shrew" will begin Feb. 21.

Conveniently situated in the center of downtown Fort Worth and a local favorite, the Jubilee Theatre is bringing the musical influences of 1930's Harlem to Texas with the musical, "Trav'lin". Commencing with the preview performance on March 29, the Jubilee Theatre will introduce a story centered around three couples and their quest for love. Where appearances in love games are all a facade and all may not be as it seems, this intriguing production will leave you mesmerized and heavily amused. Blending the musical and jazz inspirations of 1930's Harlem Renaissance composer J.C. Johnson, this theatrical performance is similar to many Broadway performances in its class. Written by Gary Holmes and Allan Shapiro, "Trav'lin" is an excellent addition to your spring 2013 theater schedule.
