200+ Animals Rescued From A Single Kaufman County Residence
KAUFMAN COUNTY (CBSDFW.COM) – More than 200 animals were taken from a home in Kaufman County from filthy conditions, according to the SPCA of Texas. The animal rescue group took custody of 166 rabbits, 36 guinea pigs, 12 goats, five cats, one dog and one bull on Thursday.
The animals were housed inside a shed, inside a barn and outside the barn. Many of the animals were kept in feces-filled cages stacked on top of each other, with different health issues. Rescuers noticed the rabbits have open sores, matted fur, hair loss, ear discharge, eye discharge and long nails. The goats were kept away from food and water. Some of the guinea pigs have hair loss.
The SPCA says it received a complaint of suspected animal cruelty on July 16 and tried unsuccessfully to get ahold of the property owner. The animals were removed nine days later and a custody hearing will be held for some of them on August 2. If the SPCA is granted final custody of the animals at the hearing, they will be adopted out on a case by case basis.
