2-Time Drunk Driver Kills 1 In Grand Prairie DWI Crash
GRAND PRAIRIE (CBSDFW.COM) - Grand Prairie Police say a man with two prior drunken driving convictions and no driver's license is accused of killing a motorist and injuring several others in another drunken driving wreck.
Gustavo Camacho, 31, was behind the wheel despite his convictions Friday night, police say. A spokesman said Camacho slammed into the back of two vehicles that had slowed to a crawl Friday night on Interstate 30 near the construction zone around Highway 161.
32-year-old Shun Jerome Williams was in the back seat of a Nissan Sentra which was struck by the 1993 Ford Ranger Camacho was driving, police say.
Detectives say the impact forced the Nissan into a GMC Yukon, which was carrying three members of the Lara family.
Williams was pronounced dead at an Arlington hospital.
"He was my big brother," says Antonio Williams, 15, when asked about the collision. Shun Williams is survived by his mother, his grandmother, two daughters, a brother and a sister.
Four other people were treated at local hospitals and released.
Police say Camacho was convicted of Driving While Intoxicated in 2003 and again in 2010. He served 180 days in jail for the 2003 conviction, 24 months on probation, and was ordered to pay an $800 fine and $298 in court costs.
Grand Prairie Police say they don't know how much time Camacho served for the 2010 DWI but Dallas County Jail officials say he served 35 days.
Grand Prairie Police say Camacho has never possessed a driver's license.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving says this case serves as an example of why Texas should implement sobriety checkpoints. Texas is one of 12 states that prohibit sobriety checkpoints. MADD officials say Texas ranks first in the nation in terms of drunk driving fatalities.
"He took my child's life," says Icerene Edwards, Williams' mother. "I think there needs to be something done about it."
Camacho is charged with Intoxication Manslaughter and Intoxication Assault in connection with Friday's wreck.
