2 Kids Found Alone In Denton Apartment Complex, Twice
DENTON (CBSDFW.COM) - Twice in just about one week, two very young North Texas children were found wandering around a Denton apartment complex. Neighbors said that no adults were even home to watch over the kids. The mother refutes that allegation.
Kimberly Martin said that she tries hard to keep an eye on her two children, but they have been getting out of the apartment lately. "I have never left them alone," Martin told CBS 11 News. "There was someone there."
But neighbors found Martin's 4-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter roaming around the apartment complex all alone on Tuesday afternoon, after hearing the children screaming near the street. "They were burning their feet on the hot concrete," said Mark Hook, one of the people who saw the two kids outside. "That's not tolerated. That's not allowed. It's too dangerous."
According to Hook, the same thing happened just about a week ago. He took the children to the apartment manager's office. Martin insisted that her kids were not home alone. She said that her sister was with them, but was sleeping.
And this most recent time, Martin explained, "I dozed off. And so I look up, my little boy come telling me someone was at the door. It was the office manager, she said the kids was... asked me if I was missing two kids. And I told her, 'Yeah.'"
How did they get out twice? "My little boy know how to climb," Martin said. "He get his stool and know how to unlock the top lock."
The manager said that she went inside of Martin's apartment unit both times that the two kids were found. And both times, she said, the apartment was empty.
Child Protective Services has not taken the children away from Martin. Instead, they said, they have worked out a plan with the mother to prevent another incident from happening. Police in Denton said that Martin could still face charges, but it all depends on the results of their investigation, which is still underway.
