Good Samaritan, Driver Killed In Crash On LBJ Freeway
GARLAND (CBSDFW.COM) - Garland police are investigating a deadly crash on LBJ Freeway that killed two people Friday morning.
Officials say it happened around 2:45 a.m. in the westbound lanes of the freeway near Jupiter Road.
According to authorities, a Mitsubishi vehicle was speeding on westbound LBJ when it hit a barrier wall on the left side of the road. The woman driving got out of the car. As this happened, a good Samaritan stopped on the right side of the freeway and walked across to help the woman.
As the man was helping, a woman driving a Toyota vehicle did not slow down for the crash and struck the crashed Mitsubishi and the good Samaritan who was standing outside the car. Authorities say the Toyota vehicle also dragged the driver who originally crashed across the highway.
Both the good Samaritan and the woman driver of the Mitsubishi were pronounced dead at the scene. Police say the driver of the Toyota, later identified as 23-year-old Ashlynn Hurley, was taken to a hospital.
Investigators believe Hurley was intoxicated at the time of the crash.
Hurley has been charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter and has been taken to Garland jail.
The female driver of the Mitsubishi was identified as 20-year-old Mikayla Prince of Van Buren, Arkansas, and the good Samaritan was identified as James Fofanah of Dallas.
Additionally, Prince had a male passenger with her who also got out of the car but was uninjured.
The westbound lanes of LBJ Freeway were closed in the early hours of Friday which caused hour-long backups. The lanes have since been opened.
