Dallas Fire Rescue Douse 4-Alarm Blaze At West Dallas Plant
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Dallas Fire Rescue has contained a four-alarm blaze that broke out behind a waste management plant in West Dallas.
Large black plumes of smoke are wafting into the air behind Standard Waste Management in the 5000 block of Cash Road. Fire crews were called to it at about 2:41 p.m. By 4 p.m., officials called for four alarms, although it appeared firefighters had it under control by that point.
Dallas Fire Rescue spokesman Jason Evans said the multiple alarms were called because of the intense heat.
Smoke was visible all the way to downtown for hours after the fire.
Evans said the fire started when a front loader tipped over pushing a load of cardboard boxes, igniting the stack. High winds carried the embers to other stacks of compacted cardboard and the fire spread rapidly.
One employee was treated for "breathing issues," Evans said, and a firefighter was overcome by the heat. Both were treated at the scene and there were no other injuries.
"Currently, fresh firefighters are rotating in to relieve those who have been here since the onset," Evans wrote.
