15 Mosquito Samples Tested Positive For West Nile In Dallas County
DALLAS (CBS 11 NEWS) - CBS 11 News has learned that 15 mosquito samples across Dallas County have tested positive for the West Nile Virus.
As many as 4 of those cities sent spray trucks out Thursday night to ward off the disease which can be transmitted to humans.
One of the neighborhoods where West Nile carrying mosquitoes has been detected is in Highland Park where John and Susan Long often walk their dogs in the evening.
"We either try to go out after dark when its completely dark because its cooler or earlier in the evening," says Susan Long.
The 15 mosquito traps where samples tested positive were in Cockrell Hill, Grand Prairie, Duncanville, Mesquite and Highland Park.
"The standard incubation for West Nile is going to be 14 days," says Dr. Cedric Spak, Baylor Infectious Disease Specialist. "This type of news is important to know as we look forward to the future."
The first human case of the disease this year in Denton County was announced Thursday.
A man in his forties has been diagnosed with West Nile Fever.
Dallas County's Health Director Zach Thompson says its possible aerial spraying will be used again this summer.
Last year's decision to use it was controversial and expensive.
"Everything is on the table," says Thompson.
