13 War Veterans Honored With D.C. Trip
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Some local heroes are in for a special treat ahead of Veterans Day. The Texas Rangers and Southwest Airlines are taking 13 veterans -- and their loved ones -- to Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, as part of a program called 'Faces of Freedom.'
Rangers fans submitted nominations for somebody who was courageous in the line of duty. Those who were selected by the team received VIP access to a ballgame and were recognized on the field.
Now, those 13 veterans will be heading to the nation's capital to see famous monuments, including war memorials. "I just think it's fantastic to get to go to D.C. and get to see some of the cemeteries and things like that," said traveling veteran Steve Atha. "I thank the Rangers and I thank Southwest Airlines."
The veterans will stay in Washington, D.C. for two days.
This is the third year for the 'Faces of Freedom' program. All branches of the military are represented with this honor. Included in this year's group are Vietnam War veterans and Purple Heart recipients.
In one case, a 90-year-old veteran passed away a few weeks ago. His son and daughter-in-law are heading to Washington, D.C. in his honor.
