1 Person Dead In Dallas Wrong-Way Crash
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A wrong-way crash in Dallas left one person dead early Monday morning. The incident took place at about 3:30 a.m. along the northbound lanes of Central Expressway near Hall Street.
A driver in an SUV was traveling southbound in those northbound lanes, perhaps for as far as 20 miles. The driver was first reported in Plano, then traveled through Richardson and into Dallas. Officers from the Richardson Police Department located the wrong-way driver and tried to make contact with lights and sirens turned on, but were unable to stop that person before the SUV crashed into an oncoming car.
Prior to that crash, the wrong-way driver had clipped another oncoming vehicle, but no injuries were reported.
The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene. He was later identified as 51-year-old Jose Portillo of Dallas. The wrong-way driver was taken to the hospital in unknown condition. That person's name has not been released. Both drivers were trapped inside of their vehicles and had to be removed by rescue crews.
The suspect now faces a charge of intoxication manslaughter.
Police closed the northbound lanes of the highway, along with several other roads leading to this part of the highway, in order to clean up the mess and conduct an investigation. Everything has since been opened back up to traffic.
