The phenomenon, once known as "Earthshine," occurs when the dark side of the moon is illuminated by light reflecting off planet Earth.
Authorities had been aware of the trove of artifacts, but the diver's sighting provided an exact location, allowing researchers to carry out an investigation.
"Despite being quite a large dog ... it was a joy to carry such a relatively lightweight casualty," the rescue team wrote.
The tornado touched down at around 4 a.m. local time and caused "extensive damage" to a highway and buildings.
"Apparently cows do not want suspected criminals loitering in their pasture," police said.
Experts confirmed the object was a 2.2 stony chondrite meteorite that was over four billion years old.
