John Kelly

John Kelly, who joined CBS News and Stations in 2023 as Vice President of Data Journalism, is an Edward R. Murrow Award winning journalist with more than 25 years' experience leading data and investigative reporting locally and nationally.

He previously founded and led the award-winning nationwide data journalism initiative for ABC Owned TV Stations, collaborating with ABC News, FiveThirtyEight, ESPN, National Geographic, and other partners inside and outside The Walt Disney Company. Before that, he founded and then led a similar Data and Investigations unit for USA Today and its network of local newspapers and television stations in more than 100 communities across the country.

Kelly's data and investigative teams have produced impactful and groundbreaking journalism that has been recognized with multiple honors, including Pulitzer Prize finalists, Emmy Awards, two national Edward R. Murrow Awards, three regional Murrow Awards and Harvard's Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting. His teams' work has made the Sigma Awards Shortlist of the world's best data journalism in 2020, 2021 and 2022.

His data journalism team's mission is to use data science, computer programming and investigative reporting to help journalists find and tell powerful stories that make a difference in people's lives and communities. He is passionate about building diverse, cross-disciplinary teams that can tackle the hardest-to-solve investigative problems and deliver innovative news and information products. He is also a longtime speaker, trainer and committee member for Investigative Reporters & Editors and the National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting.
