First U.S. case of Omicron variant reported

The Biden administration is set to announce new measures Thursday aimed at curbing COVID-19 after the first-known U.S. case of the Omicron variant was reported. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced the individual who tested positive for the newly discovered variant recently returned to Northern California after taking a trip to South Africa. According to health officials, the individual is vaccinated and displaying mild symptoms. CBS News correspondent Laura Podesta joins CBSN AM with more.

Global concerns grow over Omicron variant

Researchers are trying to learn more about the Omicron COVID-19 variant and whether or not it is resistant to existing vaccines or more deadly than other variants. CBS news foreign correspondent Debora Patta takes us inside one of the labs in South Africa where the new strain was first discovered. Then, Dr. Stanley Perlman, a professor of microbiology, immunology and pediatrics at the University of Iowa, joins CBSN to discuss the latest.
