Assaults on Peace Corps volunteers

A government watchdog says the Peace Corps is failing to do enough to protect volunteers from sexual assault. The percentage of women in the Peace Corps who say they've suffered a sexual assault rose to 38 percent in 2016. In 2015 a whistleblower spoke to "CBS This Morning" about her belief there was a culture of "victim blaming." Her complaint launched a lengthy investigation, and the results have recently became public. Kris Van Cleave reports.

Pressure to change a culture of victim-blaming goes back years, but some survivors still claim they are blamed or punished

CBS News has obtained evidence that the Peace Corps is struggling with sexual assaults in its ranks. A survey shows nearly 20 percent of volunteers experienced some type of sexual assault, and more than half of those say they suffered repeat attacks. Pressure to change a culture of victim-blaming goes back years, but some survivors still claim they are blamed or punished. Kris Van Cleave reports.
