Special counsel to oversee Trump probes

The Justice Department has appointed special counsel, Jack Smith, to oversee parts of the January 6 investigation and Mar-a-Lago classified documents probe. The announcement comes just days after former President Donald Trump announced plans to run again in 2024. CBS News chief national security and justice correspondent Jeff Pegues and congressional correspondent Scott MacFarlane joined CBS News' Catherine Herridge to discuss that plus Republicans' plans to launch investigations of their own.

Special counsel appointed in Trump investigations

Attorney General Merrick Garland announced Friday that a special counsel has been appointed to oversee the Department of Justice's investigation into former President Donald Trump regarding the documents seized from Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate, and his role in the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection. Garland said that given Trump's decision to run for president again, it was in the public interest to make the appointment. Jeff Pegues reports.

Special counsel named for Trump investigations

Attorney General Merrick Garland named Jack Smith, currently the chief prosecutor for the special counsel at the Hague, to be special counsel overseeing two investigations related to former President Donald Trump: one regarding documents seized from Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence, and the other involving whether anyone interfered with the transfer of power after the 2020 presidential election or certification of the Electoral College vote on Jan. 6, 2021. Trump's legal options after Mar-a-Lago search

Former President Donald Trump's legal team is expected to file a motion in court seeking the appointment of a neutral arbiter to review and possibly return evidence collected during the FBI search at his Mar-a-Lago estate. Meanwhile, the Justice Department is facing a deadline to submit redactions for the affidavit. Mar-a-Lago search warrant unsealed

A federal judge has unsealed the search warrant that authorized the FBI search of former President Donald Trump's Florida home. The document reveals highly-classified documents were recovered from Mar-a-Lago, and indicates it's part of an investigation into possible violations of the Espionage Act.
