Brazil's Bolsonaro downplays COVID-19 threat

Brazil has surpassed China's official coronavirus death toll, although President Jair Bolsonaro continues to downplay the threat. Local official there have been left to implement lockdowns themselves, which can be difficult in poor, crowded neighborhoods. Ecuador has also suffered during the outbreak, with bodies in its largest city, Guayaquil, going uncollected for days. California, Michigan tighten lockdowns

California Governor Gavin Newsom is closing Orange County beaches once again after concerns that crowded beaches would jeopardize public health. The decision was met with frustration from some residents and a local official. Also, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer extended the state's emergency declaration by executive order after the Republican-controlled legislature declined. Florida takes "small step" toward reopening

Florida is among the latest states to announce it is lifting parts of its lockdown, with public spaces in two hard-hit counties being open with social distancing in place. Some, like local bookstore owner Mitch Kaplan, worry it may be too early to begin the process. Iowa is also reopening most of its 99 counties, despite statewide virus cases continuing to rise.
