Jan. 6 panel issuing report week after next

The House panel investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol plans to release its final report the week of Dec. 19 and will likely make criminal referrals to the Justice Department. The House voted to repeal the military's COVID vaccine mandate in passing a sweeping $858 billion defense spending measure. And newly minted one and five dollar bills were signed, for the first time ever, by women: Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and U.S. Treasurer Lynn Malerba. Their signatures will appear on bills going into circulation next year.

Shooting outside Georgia Walmart wounds one

A shooting outside a Walmart in Marietta, Georgia left one person wounded. Responding officers determined the gunfire was between two separate groups. Several people have been detained for questioning. Children's painkillers are in high demand but short supply as respiratory illnesses continue to rise. And Time magazine has named Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy its Person of the Year, calling this year's choice "the most clear-cut in memory."

Warnock projected to win Ga. Senate runoff

In Georgia's run-off election, incumbent Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock has defeated Republican challenger Herschel Walker, giving democrats an outright majority of 51-49- in the senate and capping off an underwhelming midterm elections cycle for the GOP. A federal judge has agreed to dismiss a civil lawsuit against Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman for the killing of Jamal Khashoggi. And Hawaii officials have activated the National Guard after the Mauna Loa volcano eruption sent lava toward a key highway.

Supreme Court takes up 1st Amendment case

The U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in a case involving a Colorado graphic designer who says she has a First Amendment right to refuse to create websites for same-sex weddings, despite a state anti-discrimination law. Residents in Indonesia are evacuating as Mount Semeru, the country's highest volcano, has begun erupting, and McDonald's is testing new tech: a special pick-up window that identifies when customers are nearby.
