Israel approves Gaza aid, bombings continue

President Biden secured a commitment from Israel to stop bombing the area around the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and the Gaza Strip so desperately needed humanitarian aid can flow into the enclave for the first time since Israel imposed a complete blockade on Oct. 7. But it remained unclear on Thursday when the border would open, and Israeli airstrikes continued across other parts of Gaza. Biden plans to address the U.S. about the war Thursday night. CBS News' Ian Lee and Jim Axelrod have the latest.

Biden speaks after Israel trip

President Biden spoke to reporters Wednesday aboard Air Force One at Ramstein Air Base in Germany. The president discussed his trip to Israel and commented on the deadly blast at a Gaza hospital. Mr. Biden said earlier that U.S. military data had left him convinced that an Israeli airstrike did not cause the explosion, as some Palestinian factions had claimed. Israel has accused the Hamas-allied Palestinian Islamic Jihad group of being behind the blast.

Biden comments on Gaza hospital blast

Speaking about Tuesday's explosion at a Gaza hospital that killed hundreds, President Biden told Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that "it appears it was done by the other team." He later said his assessment was based on U.S. military data. Israel's military has vehemently denied responsibility for the hospital explosion, blaming a rocket fired by Islamic Jihad militants in Gaza that it said fell short and hit a parking lot next to the hospital. CBS News' Roxana Saberi and Ed O'Keefe have more on the president's visit to Israel.

Biden arrives in Israel for wartime visit

President Biden landed in Tel Aviv, Israel, Wednesday morning, where he was greeted with an embrace by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Mr. Biden was to meet Israeli leaders in a show of support amid Israel's war with the Palestinian militant group Hamas and his first remarks were a strong show of that support. CBS News correspondent Roxana Saberi reports from Tel Aviv on the president's visit and retired Ambassador Gerald Feierstein, a distinguished senior fellow at the Middle East Institute, joins CBS News to discuss the situation.
