There is growing fear in a suburban St. Louis community over a local landfill containing nuclear waste left over from the Cold War. The radioactive material was dumped there illegally in the 1970s. There's also a "hot spot" burning underground in a second landfill, just three football fields away. Vinita Nair reports from the West Lake landfill in Bridgeton, Missouri.

Less than one month ago, residents of Middletown, California were driven from their homes as a wildfire raced through their community. Half of the town burned down in what was named “Valley Fire.” It was the third worst in California history, but thanks to the heroic efforts of firefighters, many lives were saved. Carter Evans reports as survivors are determined to rebuild.

Firefighters out west continue to battle enormous wildfires that span across five states. More than 45 fires are burning. Massive flames have hit Washington state the hardest. President Obama has declared a state of emergency and authorities say they have no idea how many homes have been destroyed. Thousands of firefighters are on the lines, three died earlier this week in north-central Washington. Carter Evans spoke to the widow of one of those men.
