Electric planes: A new revolution in the air

Of all the major industries that spew out planet-warming greenhouse gasses, one stands out as unfixable - so far. Fossil fuel power plants can be replaced with wind and solar power. One can switch to electric cars. But as Mark Phillips reports from the British Aviation History Museum for the "CBS This Morning" series Eye on Earth, the one thing aircraft have had in common down through the ages is aviation fuel. A commercially viable electric airplane cannot yet be made, aviation fuel is too powerful to replace with batteries.

What's behind electric car push?

The two largest automakers in the U.S. are stepping up efforts to roll out electric vehicles. General Motors announced it will introduce at least 20 all-electric vehicles by 2023 and Ford created a group to deliver 13 models over the next five years. CBS News contributor and Wired editor-in-chief Nicholas Thompson joins "CBS This Morning" to discuss how Tesla helped spur the push, and why infrastructure to support electric cars appears soon to follow.
