Political threats rise in U.S. ahead of 2024

As former President Donald Trump deals with the impact of new indictments, officials are predicting additional calls of violence similar to those seen leading up to the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol riot. The number of people who agree force is justified to restore the Trump presidency is up to nearly 18 million American adults, according to a University of Chicago survey. Robert Pape, UChicago political science professor, joins "America Decides" to discuss how officials are responding to and preparing for these threats.

Former President Donald Trump and 18 allies, including former chief of staff Mark Meadows and attorney Rudy Giuliani, are accused of trying to overturn Georgia's 2020 presidential election results in an indictment handed down Monday night. CBS News' Jarred Hill reports on the 13 new criminal charges Trump faces. Fulton County, Georgia, District Attorney Fani Willis said late Monday that former President Donald Trump and 18 allies who were indicted by a grand jury have until noon ET on Friday, Aug. 25 to turn themselves in or an arrest warrant will be issued. Willis addressed reporters shortly after a grand jury indicted Trump and 18 others on 41 counts, including 13 against Trump, of election fraud, racketeering and other charges related to alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

Breaking down Georgia's charges against Trump

A grand jury in Fulton County, Georgia, indicted former President Donald Trump and more than a dozen of his associates, charging them with election fraud, racketeering and other counts related to alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election on Monday. The filing lists 41 total counts, including 13 against Trump, and notes there are 30 unindicted co-conspirators. CBS News congressional correspondent Nikole Killion has more from Atlanta on the charges Trump and his associates are facing.
