Congress works to avert government shutdown

The House of Representatives passed a short-term resolution Thursday that would temporarily fund the government through February 18. It's now up to the Senate to stop the shutdown, but as CBS News congressional correspondent Kris Van Cleave reports, a group of Republican lawmakers could derail the effort. Anthony Adragna, a Politico reporter covering Congress and author of Politco's "Congressional Minutes," joins CBSN's Lana Zak with the latest from Washington.

Political impact of inflation

Both Democrats and Republicans agree inflations hurts. However, conservative groups are using the skyrocketing inflation rates as fuel to inflame fears among voters ahead of the midterm elections next year. One group released a political ad called "Biden doesn't get it", which paints the president as ignoring the concerns of inflation the American people have. Brett Samuels, a White House reporter for The Hill, explains to CBSN's Lana Zak about the political impact of the inflation rise.

N.H. governor to seek reelection, declines Senate run

Republican Governor Chris Sununu has decided against challenging Democrat Maggie Hassan for her Senate seat and will instead run for a fourth term as New Hampshire governor. Senate Republicans had largely expected Sununu to be their best chance at flipping the chamber in next year's midterms.
