Drugmakers respond to COVID-19 variants

Johnson and Johnson has reported promising results from its single-dose coronavirus vaccine and plans to apply for emergency use authorization in early February. Meanwhile, the virus variant first identified in South Africa has now been found in the United States. CBS News' Mola Lenghi reports, and Dr. Bob Lahita spoke with CBSN's Anne-Marie Green and Vladimir Duthiers about the highly contagious new strain and the work drugmakers are doing to fight variants that continue to appear.

Reopening schools safely amid COVID

The Biden administration is pushing to reopen schools despite recent numbers indicating January will be the deadliest month of the pandemic to date. CBS News' Meg Oliver reports, and then Dr. John Bradley joins CBSN's Tanya Rivero to discuss when vaccines will be available for children and how parents can prepare kids for the return of in-person learning. White House plans to buy millions more vaccines

The Biden administration's push to purchase 200 million more COVID-19 vaccine doses would put the government's total order at enough to vaccinate more than 90% of the U.S. population. Worldview: French police accused of racism

Six international organizations, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have initiated legal action against France over alleged racism in law enforcement. In India, at least one farmer is dead and more than 80 police officers injured during protests against a controversial series of agricultural reforms. And Australia will compensate asylum-seekers whose personal information was exposed in a breach.
