WWII-Era Hand Grenade Found By San Anselmo Work Crew
SAN ANSELMO (CBS SF) - A World War II-era hand grenade was found near a creek bed in San Anselmo Thursday, police said.
A tree-trimming company hired by a property owner at 360 Redwood Road discovered the grenade while clearing brush and tree debris shortly after 2 p.m.
Police were unable to determine whether the grenade was a live round initially, and contacted the University of California at Berkeley bomb squad for assistance.
Police sent digital pictures of the grenade to the bomb squad before their arrival.
The bomb squad, which said the grenade appeared to be from around World War II, arrived at the scene shortly before 5 p.m. and determined the device was inert.
Officers on the scene ensured that there was no public access to the area where the grenade was found, but said because it was found in a secluded location, no residents were ever in any danger.
