Work Continues On New Bay Bridge Toll Plaza
OAKLAND (KCBS) -- While much of the attention on the Bay Bridge project has been focused on the new tower, work continues on a new toll plaza, which will be 12,000 square feet smaller than the current structure.
The piledriver has been going full-bore as the new structure is being built in the parking lot just east of the current toll plaza.
Caltrans spokesman Bart Ney says that means work on the new toll plaza won't be impacted by any of the upcoming lane shifting planned for the Bay Bridge.
KCBS' Chris Filippi Reports:
"The toll plaza is actually in a different program and on a different schedule," he said.
The current toll plaza was built more than 70 years ago and has been deemed a seismic safety risk.
One reasons the new facility will be smaller than the old one is the growing reliance on electronic tolling.
The project has a price tag of $13.7 million and is expected to be ready by the end of
2012.
