Suspect In SF Jewelry Store Killings Was Facing Charges In '09 Case
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/BCN/AP) -- Two women who were killed at the jewelry store where they worked in San Francisco's South of Market neighborhood on Friday afternoon have been identified. Meanwhile, the suspect is facing charges in a 2009 incident involving a police shooting in Antioch.
The San Francisco Medical Examiner's office identified the victims as 35-year-old Khin Min and 51-year-old Lina Lim.
Barry White, 23, of Antioch, was arrested Friday on suspicion of two counts of murder and seven counts of attempted murder for a shooting and stabbing that happened at about 2 p.m. that day at 888 Brannan St., police said.
White allegedly attacked three employees at Victoga Inc., a jewelry store inside the San Francisco GiftCenter & JewelryMart, according to police.
Lim, a Daly City resident, and Min, of San Francisco, died, one from gunshot wounds and the other from stab wounds, police said.
A third victim, a man, suffered both gunshot and stab wounds and was in critical condition at San Francisco General Hospital, police said.
White, who is believed to have acted alone, left the jewelry store covered in blood after the attack and encountered police officers who were responding to reports of shots fired. He fired at the officers, missing them, and surrendered after apparently running out of ammunition, police said.
The officers were not injured, and did not return fire, police said. White was taken to a hospital with superficial wounds to his hands.
He had previously been arrested as a 19-year-old on Aug. 29, 2009, Antioch police Sgt. Tony Morefield said Monday.
Morefield said White brought guns to a party, then rammed a patrol car near West Fifth and G streets in Antioch, prompting an officer to open fire and strike him.
White was later charged with assault with a deadly weapon and resisting arrest, and his trial was scheduled to start on Aug. 19, according to Bobbi Spinola, executive assistant for the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office.
But before the trial could get under way, White was arrested for Friday's killings.
San Francisco prosecutors had not yet received White's case as of late Monday morning, district attorney's office spokesman Alex Bastian said.
The Victoga store remained closed this morning but the rest of the GiftCenter & JewelryMart had reopened for business, according to an employee at the complex.
Investigators said White appears to have had least one previous transaction at the jewelry store, but that robbery does not appear to have been a motive for the attack.
A revolver and a folding knife believed to have been used in the attack were recovered by investigators, as was a rifle found in the backseat of his car, which was parked nearby, police said.
