Woman To Stand Trial In Brutal San Mateo Boiling Water Attack
SAN MATEO (CBS SF) -- A judge has ordered trial for a Daly City woman charged with pouring boiling water on her sleeping ex-husband in a jealous rage over another woman.
Last November, prosecutors said 39-year-old Jesusa Tatad allegedly waited for her ex-husband to fall asleep and then went into his bedroom with a pot of boiling water and poured it over him, causing second- and third-degree burns over 60 percent of his body.
When he jumped out of bed and ran into the bathroom, Tatad reportedly hit him on the head with a baseball bat, according to the district attorney's office.
The victim was able to run out of their apartment complex and flag down a security guard, who called 911.
He was taken to an intensive care unit at San Francisco General Hospital, where he remained in critical condition until succumbing to his injuries on Dec. 9.
Prosecutors said the defendant believed her ex-husband was seeing another woman. The two were living together after they had divorced.
A San Mateo County judge ruled at the end of Thursday's preliminary hearing that there was enough evidence to order trial.
Tatad is charged with murder and torture for the November attack. She pleaded not guilty during a preliminary hearing in December.
Tatad is in jail without bail pending arraignment on July 31.
