Woman Survives Jump From Dumbarton Bridge
FREMONT (BCN) -- A 48-year-old woman was rescued after jumping off the Dumbarton Bridge on Monday afternoon, a Fremont fire official said.
Menlo Park and Fremont police and firefighters, the Coast Guard, and the California Highway Patrol responded to reports of an attempted suicide around 4:50 p.m., Fremont fire Battalion Chief Jim Martin said.
Responders found the woman underneath the bridge near one of the support columns, Martin said.
The woman came out of the water of her own accord at the fishing pier at the end of Marshlands Road, he said.
She appeared to be suffering from shock and possibly hypothermia, and was not verbally responsive, Martin said.
Authorities believe the woman jumped from a lower area of the bridge, from about 25 feet, he said.
The CHP received multiple calls from people driving on the bridge who had seen the woman on the bridge, CHP Sgt. Scott Yox said.
They also received a call from a man who told CHP that a family member was distraught and had threatened to jump off of the bridge, Yox said.
"Dispatchers put two and two together and she was taken into custody," Yox said.
The woman was transported to Stanford University Medical Center where she was still being held for medical evaluation Tuesday afternoon.
