Woman Returning From Party Killed In Rollover Crash On Sunnyvale Off-Ramp
SUNNYVALE (CBS SF) - The California Highway Patrol has reopened an on-ramp after a night of partying ended in a fatal accident.
The accident on northbound Highway 101 near Lawrence Expressway was reported shortly before 2 a.m., the CHP said.
Five people were in a Honda Accord traveling at speeds of about 60 mph when it off the roadway as it was approaching the off-ramp and landed on its side on a dirt embankment, CHP Officer Ross Lee said.
The group was returning from a birthday party when the vehicle took the turn too quickly and flipped, killing one woman. KCBS has learned that she was the wife of the driver.
A Sig-alert was issued at 3:01 a.m. and the northbound Highway 101 off-ramp to Lawrence Expressway was closed as the CHP conducted its investigation.
The four surviving occupants were transported to area hospitals and two of them had major injuries, according to Lee. It does not appear anyone was wearing a seatbelt.
Lee did not know the extent of the other two survivors, he said.
Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash, Lee said.
One of the surviving occupants, identified as a San Jose man, was arrested in connection with the crash, according to Lee.
