Woman Killed In Suspected DUI Crash On Highway 12 In Santa Rosa
SANTA ROSA (CBS SF) -- A 22-year-old woman was killed in a car driven by a suspected drunk driver on state Highway 12 in Santa Rosa early Sunday morning, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.
Sarai Torres-Nunez was a passenger in a Honda SUV driven by 21-year-old Antonio Moreno-Murillo that overturned and crashed into a tree off of the Dutton Avenue on-ramp to Highway 12, according to CHP Officer Marcus Hawkins.
Hawkins said Moreno-Murillo was heading east on Highway 12 and took the Dutton Avenue off-ramp, then sped through a red light at the intersection, swerving to avoid an oncoming vehicle.
As he drove onto the Dutton Avenue on-ramp, Moreno-Murillo lost control of the car, which rolled over and crashed into a tree and a metal guardrail, the officer said.
The SUV came to a stop on its roof, partially blocking the highway on-ramp.
Torres-Nunez, a Santa Rosa resident, suffered fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Moreno-Murillo, also of Santa Rosa, was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital to be treated for injuries suffered in the crash.
Officers arrived at the hospital and arrested him on suspicion of driving under the influence causing death, gross vehicular manslaughter while driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license and probation violation.
