Woman, Child Killed In Head-On Crash Near Byron
BYRON (CBS SF) -- A woman and a young boy were killed in a head on collision with a big-rig on Byron Highway in Contra Costa County Friday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The road was closed for several hours in both directions around the crash site, which was on the highway near Clifton Court, going over the California Aqueduct near the Byron Airport.
The collision was first reported at 3:20 p.m. when a truck driven by a 62-year-old Antioch man noticed traffic slowing on the southbound side
of the road, CHP Officer John Fransen said.
The driver then saw a blue Oldsmobile sedan lose control and veer into the northbound lane before it smashed into the truck.
The Oldsmobile was driven by a 21-year-old Bay Point woman who was transported to a hospital but died from blunt force trauma injuries suffered in the crash.
An 8- or 9-year-old boy riding in the back seat was pronounced dead at the scene.
There were reports that diesel fuel had spilled into the roadway and a hazardous materials team responded, but Fransen said that no fuel spilled into the aqueduct.
Weather is not considered to be a factor in the collision, and whether drugs or alcohol was a factor is pending toxicology tests, Fransen said.
