Woman Attacks Raley's Supermarket Employee During Robbery
FREMONT (CBS SF) – A woman and a man were arrested on suspicion of robbing a Raley's Supermarket in Fremont on Wednesday, police said.
Officers responded at 5:25 p.m. to the store at 39200 Paseo Padre Parkway on a report of the robbery. Rachel LeClaire, a 24-year-old Oakdale woman, allegedly stole items from the store before a loss prevention employee stopped her. LeClaire had a child with her, but as the loss prevention employee tried to detain her, LeClaire allegedly attacked the employee.
As the attack occurred, LeClaire's boyfriend Gregory Merritt got out of a vehicle and allegedly acted as if he had a gun. Fearing for her life, the loss prevention employee let LeClaire go.
LeClaire put her child in the back seat of the vehicle and fled. The employee again tried to detain her. Merritt drove away with the two children inside. Merritt tried repeatedly to pick up his girlfriend as officers arrived. Police stopped Merritt and the loss prevention employee detained LeClaire.
Merritt, a 40-year-old Hayward resident, was allegedly driving on a suspended license and had a methamphetamine pipe with him.
Police took the children into protective custody.
