3 Winners Split Record Mega Millions Jackpot; 5 In Bay Area Win $227,000
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS / AP) -- Five players who bought MEGA Millions lottery tickets in the Bay Area -- along with 24 other tickets bought in California -- won nearly $230,000 each by matching five of six numbers in Friday night's record-setting $640 million draw, according to state lottery officials.
The winning numbers were 2-4-23-38-46, Mega Ball 23.
At least five Bay Area stores sold tickets that matched five numbers. According to lottery officials, the tickets are worth $138,000.
Bay Area stores that sold tickets that matched five out of six include:
- Fox Liquors on Larkin Street in San Francisco
- Fast & Easy Mart on Ardenwood Blvd. in Fremont
- Al's Liquor in San Rafael
- Liquor Tobacco & More in Sunnyvale
- 7-Eleven on Blossom Hill Road in San Jose
Because three tickets sold nationally -- in Maryland, Kansas and Illinois -- did match all six numbers in Friday night's draw, Tuesday night's MEGA Millions jackpot will be worth $12 million.
Friday's jackpot exceeds the previous $390 million record, which was split in 2007 by two winners who bought tickets in Georgia and New Jersey.
In the Bay Area and across the country, Americans plunked down an estimated $1.5 billion on the longest of long shots: 1 in 176 million.
The rarity of Friday's jackpot was fueling the fervor. Lines formed at grocery stores, gas stations, liquor stops and other venues throughout the nation.
