Wild Police Chase Through San Francisco Streets Leaves Bicyclist Hurt, Trail Of Damage
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A woman was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in San Francisco early Thursday morning after a chase and two crashes, including one that injured a pedestrian, a California Highway Patrol officer said.
CHP officers first noticed the woman a few minutes before 2 a.m. when she drove onto the Fourth Street on-ramp to westbound Interstate Highway 80, which was closed because of construction, CHP Officer Michael Ferguson said.
Officers followed her onto I-80 and tried to get her to exit at Ninth Street, but she continued on the highway and took the next exit toward Van Ness Avenue and Mission Street, he said.
The incident became a pursuit as she drove onto city streets and struck a parked car at 15th and Natoma streets, pushing the car into a man who was walking by with a bicycle, Ferguson said.
"He had a bicycle but I don't think he was riding it at the time," Ferguson said.
The pedestrian suffered minor injuries and was later transported to a hospital, he said.
After that collision, the driver continued to 17th and Mission streets, where she struck another parked car in a crash that also damaged the control box for a traffic light, Ferguson said.
"That basically stopped the car," he said.
The woman, identified as Cerena Barros, who is in her early 20s, was arrested for felony DUI causing injury, reckless driving, and evading police, Ferguson said.
He said Barros has previously been convicted of driving under the influence.
She was taken to a hospital to be evaluated as a precaution before she was booked into jail.
