Whitman on Gay Marriage at Calif. GOP Convention
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)_ As the debate over same-sex marriage continues in California courts, there's word of a potential game-changer.
Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman says she believes the state should be defending Prop. 8.
Governor Schwarznegger along with Attorney General Jerry Brown, who is Whitman's rival for the office, have announced that they will not defend Prop. 8 in court.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Whitman's first statements on how she would handle same-sex marriage as governor came before the opening of the GOP convention in San Diego.
Earlier this month District Judge Vaughn Walker threw out the ban on gay marriage. His ruling is being appealed in the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
The issue is due back in court in December, meaning it could stretch into the next governor's term.
